Et la déperdition ne se résume pas au passage de chaleur en hiver : l'été, c'est la chaleur captée par une surface sombre qui pose problème.\n111\t\n112\t### Le rôle de la réflectance solaire\n113\t\n114\tUne toiture sombre absorbe l'essentiel du rayonnement solaire et le convertit en chaleur, qu'elle rediffuse vers l'intérieur. Augmenter la réflectance inverse cette logique : la chaleur est renvoyée vers le ciel avant d'avoir pu pénétrer l'enveloppe. Les mesures du Heat Island Group du Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory chiffrent l'écart : une **toiture blanche propre réfléchissant 80 % du rayonnement reste environ 31 °C plus fraîche** qu'une toiture grise qui n'en réfléchit que 20 %, et faire passer la réflectance d'un toit de 10 à 20 % vers environ 60 % **réduit la consommation de climatisation de plus de 20 %**. Beaucoup de revêtements reposent sur des résines acryliques dont le pouvoir réfléchissant décroche en quelques saisons sous l'effet des UV et de l'encrassement, là où un polyuréthane de qualité conserve bien mieux ses valeurs.
