La consommation électrique mondiale des data centers a été estimée à **environ 415 TWh en 2024**, soit près de 1,5 pour cent de l'électricité mondiale, et **devrait approcher 945 TWh en 2030**, sous l'effet notamment de l'intelligence artificielle. Dans ce total, le refroidissement pèse d'environ 7 pour cent dans un site hyperscale efficace à plus de 30 pour cent dans un data center d'entreprise mal optimisé. Autrement dit, **c'est sur le froid que se joue l'essentiel de la marge de progrès**.\n18\t\n19\tCet article passe en revue **les méthodes qui permettent de refroidir un data center** tout en limitant la dépense énergétique : le free cooling, les systèmes adiabatiques et le cool roof. **Trois logiques complémentaires**, à arbitrer selon trois paramètres :\n20\t\n21\t- votre climat ;\n22\t- votre densité de puissance ;\n23\t- l'état de votre bâtiment.\n24\t\n25\t## Pourquoi maîtriser la température d'un data center\n26\t\n27\t### Une charge thermique à évacuer en continu\n28\t\n29\tLa chaleur dégagée dans une salle informatique provient directement de la puissance électrique des serveurs, des baies de stockage et des équipements réseau. Plus la densité de calcul augmente, plus cette charge thermique se concentre.\n30\t\n31\tL'objectif de l'exploitant est de **maintenir l'air entrant dans les baies à l'intérieur d'une fenêtre étroite**. La recommandation de référence, portée par l'ASHRAE, situe cette **plage entre 18 et 27 degrés Celsius**. En dessous, on dépense de l'énergie inutilement. Au-dessus, on prend des risques sur la fiabilité du matériel. Les locaux techniques restent des lieux de travail où interviennent des équipes de maintenance. Réduire la température des surfaces et de l'air ambiant relève donc aussi de la prévention des risques, un cadre que nous abordons à travers nos repères sur l'[inconfort thermique](/blog/inconfort-thermique).\n40\t\n41\t## Le free cooling, refroidir avec l'air extérieur\n42\t\n43\t### Le principe\n44\t\n45\tLe free cooling consiste à **exploiter directement la fraîcheur de l'air extérieur** pour refroidir la salle, plutôt que de produire du froid mécanique en permanence. Lorsque la température extérieure est suffisamment basse, l'air frais est introduit ou sert à refroidir une boucle d'eau, tandis que l'air chaud des serveurs est rejeté dehors. Les compresseurs ne se déclenchent qu'en appoint, lors des journées chaudes, ce qui **réduit nettement la consommation sur l'année**.\n46\t\n47\t**L'efficacité de la méthode dépend du climat.** Plus le nombre d'heures où l'air extérieur reste sous le seuil de consigne est élevé, plus le gain est important. Sur une grande partie du territoire français, le potentiel est réel, mais **il se réduit lors des épisodes caniculaires** de plus en plus fréquents, qui imposent alors de basculer sur le froid mécanique d'appoint.\n48\t\n49\t### Ce que disent les chiffres\n50\t\n51\tL'étude publiée par l'ADEME en 2025, conduite par le bureau Critical Building, chiffre ce gain. En modélisant des data centers de 1 et 10 mégawatts informatiques sous climat français, elle montre qu'un refroidissement aéroréfrigérant affiche un **PUE de l'ordre de 1,36 à 1,39**, tandis que des groupes à eau exploitant le free chilling **descendent à un PUE de 1,24 à 1,27**, avec un gain additionnel d'environ 7 pour cent grâce à des compresseurs à paliers magnétiques.\n52\t\n53\tLe PUE, ou Power Usage Effectiveness, rapporte l'énergie totale du site à celle consommée par l'informatique seule : **plus il s'approche de 1, plus l'installation est efficace**. L'ADEME recommande explicitement de **prioriser le free cooling** chaque fois que le climat le permet.\n54\t\n55\t**Le principal avantage du free cooling est sa sobriété.** Sa limite tient à sa dépendance météorologique et à l'espace nécessaire aux prises d'air et au filtrage. Il gagne presque toujours à être **associé à une réduction de la charge thermique entrante**, sujet sur lequel nous revenons plus loin.\n56\t\n57\t## Les systèmes adiabatiques, rafraîchir l'air avec de l'eau\n58\t\n59\tLe refroidissement adiabatique repose sur un principe physique simple : **lorsqu'on évapore de l'eau, l'évaporation absorbe de la chaleur** et abaisse la température de l'air. Concrètement, l'air est mis en contact avec des panneaux humides ou une fine brumisation, et il ressort plus frais avant d'entrer dans la salle. Contrairement aux unités CRAH, le système adiabatique n'exige pas de production d'eau glacée par compresseurs, ce qui le rend **plus économe en énergie qu'une climatisation classique**.\n60\t\n61\t**Cette méthode prolonge utilement le free cooling.** Quand l'air extérieur devient trop chaud pour rafraîchir directement la salle, un étage adiabatique permet de **gagner plusieurs degrés sans rallumer immédiatement les groupes froids**.
